This Panel Session will focus on crucial challenges fg international negotiations towards the building of a post-2012 agreement for climate change control. Beginning with an overview of the Cancun outcomes, the session will highlight the most relevant issues emerged during negotiations. The latest developments in the United States’ and European domestic climate policy will be discussed, in order to understand how their perspectives may influence the next UNFCCC Conference of the Parties (COP 17) in Durban, later this year. The debate will then proceed with a more general evaluation of the role played by different national interests in shaping international climate policy as well as the way to reconcile them into a comprehensive and widely accepted solution. In this context, particular attention will be paid to the heated debate surrounding the commitment's level of major emitters, from both developed and developing countries. Finally, this session will bring together the above aspects with the aim to investigate potential options to achieve the effectivor ongoine, long-term emission reduction required to adequately address climate change.
